CAMPAIGN TO ELECT DR. TIFFANY BRYANT
Increase Literacy Across The District
Raising Standards & Strengthening Early Foundations
Increasing literacy must begin with raising expectations. Currently, a 67% is considered passing at the elementary level, yet students receive the same recognition as those scoring much higher. This creates a false sense of achievement and leads to challenges as students advance.
There needs to be improved learning benchmarks for students entering Kindergarten, to assist educators, and parents. and indentify how effectively Pre-K programs prepare students. Early literacy gaps often persist year after year, impacting performance across all subjects.
Students who struggle with reading often disengage, leading to both academic and behavioral challenges. Literacy is the foundation for success in all areas, including math and science.
Action Focus:
• Raise expectations for student mastery in early grades
• Strengthen early literacy instruction and interventions (Pre-K to 2nd grade) with measurable outcomes
• Ensure Pre-K programs align with Kindergarten readiness standards
• Use data to identify and address learning gaps early
